WHERE TO GET HELP

History

Emotional Fitness began as a typed manuscript in 1991 when the author Cynthia Morton was still then in full flight addiction and denial of her childhood trauma. From there the concepts and later the program developed essentially out of Cynthia's personal journey of recovery from addiction and sexual and physical abuse.

The components that characterized Cynthia's success in recovery were:

  1. The power of Peer Support
  2. The healing benefits of Professional Therapy
  3. The Emotional resilience gained through Self Care

These became the three vital links that the Emotional Fitness Program is founded upon.

The Program has been operational since 2000 from the Royal Brisbane Hospital H.A.D.S. Unit (Hospital Alcohol Drug Service Unit) and to date weekly groups are still conducted for inpatients and medical staff.

Concurrently, the Program was operating out of the Emotional Fitness Centre located at Spring Hill in Brisbane with the centre also providing professional support through its clinical staff. In August 2006, the Emotional Fitness Foundation (EFF) Board of Management made a decision that to continue to expand our services, this service delivery model of running an actual 'Drop In Centre' was neither the most cost efficient nor easily transportable model, and sustainable funding was problematic. Therefore it was not the best long term option.

Therefore the decision was made to transport the program not the entire centre model to other organisations and corporations.
